Expert Advice
Contribute to your RRSP before the March 1 deadline to reduce your taxable income for the prior year. Your contribution limit is 18% of your prior year earned income, up to the annual maximum.
Maintain organized records of all business expenses, medical receipts, charitable donations, and other deductible items throughout the year. The CRA requires records to be kept for 6 years.
Even if you can't pay your full tax balance, always file your return on time. Late filing penalties (5% of balance + 1% per month) are separate from and in addition to interest on unpaid amounts.
Many Canadians miss deductions they're entitled to — home office expenses, vehicle expenses, professional dues, moving expenses, and more. Work with a tax professional to ensure you claim everything you're eligible for.
Review your NOA carefully when it arrives. It confirms your tax return was processed and shows your RRSP contribution room, any balance owing or refund, and your carry-forward amounts.
